The Local Area

Elm Bank Coastal Park boasts one of the most enviable locations on the North-East shores and on our doorstep are some wonderful places to visit, plus some great leisure activities to take part in. Did you know that Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England?

Days Out

The park may be designed for quiet, but you don’t have to go far to seek out a little more hustle and bustle.

1. Alnwick Castle & Garden:  A recorded castle for over 1,000 years and now famously the magical home of Hogwarts, there’s plenty to see and do here.

2. Farne Islands:  Home to an incredible seabird and seal colony plus stunning panoramic sea views.

3. Lindisfarne Castle:  25 minutes’ drive from Elm Bank Coastal Park lies this 16th century castle on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, accessible only at low tide by causeway.

4. East Links Family Park:  a “farm themed activity park”, with 65 available activities from feeding the animals or train safari.

5. The Lowry Trail:  LS Lowry painted over 30 cavasses of his favourite views in and around Berwick - this walk takes you around them.

6Bamburgh Castle:  Bamburgh Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. It's set above a stunning sandy beach with a breath-taking outlook. There's also the lovely village of Bamburgh with its tearooms and quaint shops to explore, as well as The Grace Darling Museum.

7. St Abbs:  St Abbs is a small, picturesque fishing village, situated at the foot of the St Abbs Head National Nature Reserve and adjacent to the St Abbs and Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve.

8. Ford and Etal:  Ford and Etal has many attractions and activities. It lies in the valley of the River Till between the Scottish Borders and the Cheviot Hills. Between Ford and Etal is Heatherslaw which has a light railway.

9. Kielder:  Kielder has been awarded Gold Tier Dark Sky Park status. At nearly 580 sq miles, the dark sky zone is the largest Dark Sky Park area of protected night sky in Europe.
